The NC DWQ Stream Identification Form, version 4.11, classifies a stream as ephemeral, intermittent or perennial. It scores the stream's geomorphology, hydrology and biology, and the total decides the class. You can fill it out in Ecobot Collector in the field, or in Ecobot Manager, and download the completed form as a PDF.
Fill out the form in Collector
For each question, use the selection wheel to choose Absent, Weak, Moderate or Strong. Collector adds up each section's score and the total for you.
The form has three sections:
- Geomorphology: the stream's physical form, such as channel structure, sediment type and floodplain features.
- Hydrology: signs of how often water flows, such as baseflow, soil evidence of high water and sediment on vegetation.
- Biology: signs of life, such as aquatic animals, plant roots and algae. More, and more varied, life usually points to a perennial stream.
How the stream is classified
| Total score | Class | Flow |
|---|---|---|
| Under 19 | Ephemeral | Dry most of the year |
| 19 to 29 | Intermittent | Seasonal |
| 30 or more | Perennial | Year-round |
